North America, United States, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A collection of Allen and Ginter's "American Indian Chiefs" N2 series which includes 50 tobacco cards, each with colored lithographic image of a different Native American chief. This collection is an authorized re-issue of the 1888 N2 series. The cards are printed on a white background, and the colors of the chiefs clothing and feathers are brightly printed. The cards contain their name and tribe and are arranged in alphabetical order (though the bottom row is not in correct alphabetical order). The cards are mounted in a frame with a brass plaque engraved with the series name and date of original printing. Initially plain paper was inserted into cigarette packs as stiffeners for the packaging. Allen & Ginter transformed the plain inserts into collectible cards. The scarcity of certain series led to reissues in later years, such as this collection. "American Indian Chiefs" is a great piece of cartophily history! Please see below for the list and order of chiefs included. Size of frame: 27" L x 1.5" W x 23" H (68.6 cm x 3.8 cm x 58.4 cm); size of card: 2.75" L x 1.5" W x 23" H (7 cm x 3.8 cm x 58.4 cm)
