- Lot Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Pueblo, ca. early 20th century CE. This is a beautiful hand-built polychrome pottery jar made using the traditional coil and scrape method with applied toad handles! The piece rests on a stable, flat base, the walls swelling upward creating a broad shoulder with a low, thick rim. The surface is slipped in a white hue then painted with stylized motifs of birds in profile, each sitting under an arched scrolling foliate shape. The three amphibian handles protrude from the sides- endearing bulbous eyes and the limbs painted onto the vessel surface - an umber brown hue with speckled black, like the bumpy skin of a desert toad. Size: 8" Diameter x 6.25" H (20.3 cm x 15.9 cm)
