Oceania, Papua New Guinea, East Sepik Province, ca. early 20th century. An impressive hand-carved wood food hook, also known as a cult hook or a suspension hook, presenting in the form of an ancestor figure standing atop a crescent-shaped hook. Depicted nude save for a thick rattan fiber and shell necklace, the intriguing figure exhibits a slender body with a lengthy torso that slightly protrudes outwards as both hand rest on his hips, creating vertical handles on either side of the implement. His sizeable head displays a smiling visage with annular, inlaid-shell eyes beneath a heavy brow, a risen nasal bridge, a pointed nose bearing a tubular bird bone septum adornment, prominent cheek bones, and full lips, all flanked by a pair of petite ears. A snake-like animal slithers across his lap, just above his enlarged genitalia. This piece would hang from the ceiling for suspending baskets that contained food or valuables to protect them from rodents or other pests. Often these hooks are decorated with ancestor spirits or clan symbols that with whom the household could commune. Size: 11" W x 45.75" H (27.9 cm x 116.2 cm)
