Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. 20th century CE. A remarkable hand-carved wooden figure of a woman holding a child, the pair on a cuboid plinth. The piece presents with an attractive natural woodgrain of swirling hues of golden caramel and chocolate brown and is adorned in black, red, and white paint. The stylized woman sits on her bulbous buttocks with her right leg under her left as she holds a reclining child on her knee with her left arm. Her right hand holds her breast, as if about to lift it to the mouth of her baby. The woman's oversizeed head features a serene expression composed of two cowrie shell eyes, a bent nose, and an open mouth. She is nude, save for a black and white striped collar necklace and a black and red hemispherical headdress that sits atop her short black hair. Also nude, the infant displays a short black coiffure, a triangular nose, a straight, closed mouth, and a pair of white-painted, recessed eyes.
