Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Papuan Gulf, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A stunning and sizeable hand-carved wood figure depicted standing atop an integral plinth and wearing a stylized mask, all adorned in red, white, and black pigments. The tall figure displays muscular legs, a lengthy body, and slender arms that fall from sloped shoulders. His hands lay folded together at his narrow hips, as his fascinating vizard exhibits a jagged periphery, a smiling mouth, an openwork, beak-like nose, and inlaid cowrie shell eyes. Chips to base. Stable fissures to base, proper left arm, torso and back of head. Some nicks and abrasions throughout. Otherwise, excellent with nice patina and impressive remaining pigments.
