Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River region, Iatmul people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A large and intricate ancestral figure, hand-carved from hard wood, displaying intriguing details in a markedly tribal manner. The figure stands on broad feet and delineated legs atop a hemispherical plinth, with a pointed mask serving as a loincloth. Both hands are crossed in front of a slender abdomen, tracing upwards to rolling shoulders and a thick neck, with another mask draped in front of the upper chest. A stylized head is characterized by cowrie shell eyes, grooved eye brows and brow line, an aquiline nose with a large nose ring and knotted rope strand, all below a plume of wispy feathers which comprise the coiffure. Covered in dark-brown pigment and painted with orange and yellow details, this is a wonderful example from the Iatmul tribe! Custom wooden display stand included. Size (figure): 17.25" H (43.8 cm); size (figure with feathers): 27" H (68.6 cm); 18.875" H (47.9 cm) on included custom stand.
