**First Time At Auction**
Central America, Panama, San Blas Islands, Kuna/Cuna Indians, ca. early 20th century CE. An abstract standing anthropomorphic figure, hand-carved from caramel-hued hard wood, sometimes referred to as a "nuchu" or "nucho." The figure has a wide abdomen with rounded shoulders, attenuated arms, and a squat neck, all supported by slender, delineated legs. A minimalist head boasts a fine line nose, incised mouth, heavy brows, and a rounded chin, all framed by a plateaued coiffure with straight bangs on the verso. Light-brown patina envelops the entire figure, and traces of original vermilion pigment are visible across the face. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 3" W x 6.125" H (7.6 cm x 15.6 cm); 7.4" H (18.8 cm) on included custom stand.
The Kuna people live on a series of thirty islands in the archipelago of San Blas in the Caribbean. This is a region of high humidity, hot temperatures, and intense rains. In their traditional medicinal practice, bad spirits of illness - known as "ponis" - must be expelled from the body by a traditional medicine man called an "inatuledi." The medicine man removes the illness using nuchu - good spirits - who are represented in wooden carvings.
