Native American, Pacific Northwest, Tlingit, ca. 20th to 21st century CE. A stunning wood mask, expertly hand-carved and hand-painted in black on a smooth caramel-hued woodgrain. The expressive visage displays bulging, heavy-lidded eyes with openwork pupils beneath huge, arched eyebrows, a curved nose with wide nostrils, and protruding lips held slightly open to display a lower row of teeth. A pair of drill holes flanks the verso of the vizard, allowing it to be strapped to the face of its wearer. Note how the natural parallel striations of the woodgrain nicely compliment the form and decoration of this wonderful example! Size: 7" W x 9.75" H (17.8 cm x 24.8 cm)
