**First Time At Auction**
West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba culture, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden female figure covered in a thin layer of light brown pigment who stands atop an integral plinth while supporting a sizable bowl that rests on a pair of V-shaped legs. The woman presents nude save only for a striated waistband visible along the verso and holds both arms out along the bowl's walls. Her tall head features protruding ovoid eyes, a broad nose above full lips, and backswept ears, all beneath a centrally parted coiffure. Figures like this are meant as welcoming ushers for guests into one's home, and the bowl is meant to hold kola nuts as an offering of hospitality and friendship. Size: 8.75" L x 5.3" W x 17.1" H (22.2 cm x 13.5 cm x 43.4 cm)
