Nicario Jimenez (Peruvian / American, b. 1957). "The Dance of the Condor" and "Mask Makers," 20th century. A pair of wooden and molded dough retablos that exemplify traditional folk art from the Andean region of Ayacucho in Peru. Both are signed on the verso by the artist. Each retablo consists of a wooden case and double doors with metal latches. The exteriors are painted with foliate patterns. The people and objects within are made of a dough-like mixture of potatoes and gypsum powder that is painted with vibrant hues. The taller retablo contains four figures around a table with masks hung about them. The other retablo is filled with a procession of people wearing avian condor costumes, carrying flags, and playing instruments. These retablos were portable story boxes that were originally used by Catholic priests to teach indigenous people Christian beliefs. Here the retablo form has been adapted to tell stories of everyday life of Peruvian people, and Jimenez is a third-generation retablo artist who captures visual histories of culture in Peru and immigrants in the United States. Size of tall retablo closed: 4" L x 2.25" W x 7.375" H (10.2 cm x 5.7 cm x 18.7 cm); open: 8.25" L x 2.25" W x 7.375" H (21 cm x 5.7 cm x 18.7 cm); smaller retablo closed: 6" L x 2.125" W x 5.25" H (15.2 cm x 5.4 cm x 13.3 cm); open: 12" L x 2.125" W x 5.25" H (30.5 cm x 5.4 cm x 13.3 cm)
