Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Northern Washington state to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Nootka or Makah tribes, ca. early to mid-20th century. A fiber rain hat hand-woven from tight strips of reed and wood. The hat is constructed with a broad conical shape and knob at the top. The interior has an integral sweat band woven from wider strips, to secure the hat in place. Hats created in this region were worn by natives during any number of outdoor tasks, though they oftentimes represent the extensive trade network that existed prior to the age of exploratory expeditions between indigenous and American and European mariners.
