Native American Indian, Northwest United States, Washington state, Makah, ca. 1910 CE. A finely twined round basket with a fitted lid comprised of cedar bark, bear grass, and aniline dyes. The exterior walls are adorned with three abstract boat motifs in brown and red hues. Beneath are striations of acorn brown that match those of the sides of the lid above. The top of the lid is decorated with an abstract swirling design in red, orange, and taupe on the same natural ground. The bottom of the vessel is woven with raffia of the same vintage. Size: 4.375" in diameter x 2.25" H (11.1 cm x 5.7 cm)

Condition
Expected age wear with some fading to pigmentation, but the overall form is still strong. An old label on the underside reads, "One of 23 Indian Artifacts Mason A. Foley purchased from the Gov. John D. Cong estate in Hingham, Mass. I purchased this basket from Mrs. Foley in 1973. John P. Richardson." Another old identifying label and a former collection label on the underside as well.
