Bobby Nashookpuk (Inupiat, b. 1958), "He Has Seen the Spirit", 20th century. Carved from fossilized whalebone, a sculpture of a hooded male head by Bobby Nashookpuk, referencing his culture's story masks and presenting an expressive visage. Startled by a spirit sighting (as the title of this piece implies), the face presents wide-open eyes comprised of white stone inlays for the sclera with circular baleen inlays for the irises/pupils and a wide-open mouth revealing both upper and lower teeth, carved from the same white stone as the eye scleras. Size: 9" W x 11.375" H (22.9 cm x 28.9 cm); 12.25" H (31.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Born in the village of Pt. Hope, on the Arctic Coast of Alaska, Bobby Nashookpuk sculpts with ancient materials to communicate the depth of his culture and traditions. In the press release for their 2010 exhibition entitled, "Bobby Nashookpuk, Bone and Myth", the curatorial team of the Alaska House Art Gallery noted, "In a changing world, Bobby is telling the stories of his ancestors in a way few can. A rare, mythical and spiritual connection is made between the artist and the traditional materials and is translated to us, the viewer."
