**First Time At Auction**
Latin America, Mexico, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This is a highly stylized steatite carving of a totem pole featuring fierce animals and anthropomorphic forms. The 4 figures rest on a rectangular base and are stacked atop each other, the base figure is a large open-mouthed jaguar with large fangs and a stylized square shaped head, nostrils, and narrow feline eyes to the sides. Above is a crouching humanoid figure with bulging eyes and blocky profile, another jaguar, and finally a grinning head - human, but with bared teeth and oversized nose, perhaps a representation of Tlaloc. Tlaloc is the Mesoamerican rain deity who - with his axe made of lightning - strikes the clouds and produces thunder and rain. In an iconographic sense, he is often shown with goggles around his eyes and large fangs. He is also frequently represented in artwork from Teotihuacan and the Aztecs, and seems to have been one of the most commonly depicted Mesoamerican gods. Size: 1.5" L x 1.75" W x 9.5" H (3.8 cm x 4.4 cm x 24.1 cm)
