Western Europe, Italy, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A spectacular gold ring comprised of a slender band that dramatically thicken to a sizeable, ovoid bezel incised with an elaborate coat of arms. Skillfully carved, the bezel features an ovoid shield supported by a lion dexter and an eagle sinister, both shown regardant. The shield is divided into 4 quadrants - a style known as quartering or party per cross - each adorned by a different symbol with 3 upside-down acorns against a paly field in the upper sinister, an indecipherable object - perhaps an insect or flower - in the upper dexter, a pair of antlers against a bezante field in the lower dexter, and a larger bird in the lower sinister. A petite orb and crown cap the shield, as a sparrow stands at the top, flanked by swirling vegetal designs. Size (ring): 0.9" Diameter (2.3 cm); (bezel): 0.6" L x 0.5" W (1.5 cm x 1.3 cm); gold quality: 74.4% (equivalent to over 17 karats); weight: 13.7 grams; US ring size: 6.5
Alternatively, the below the shield is embellished by spiraling motifs. The interior of the band is stamped with 2 marks: one reads "75" for the gold quality, while the other is indecipherable.
