Southeast Asia, Eastern Indonesia, Sumba Island, ca. late 20th c. A stunning textile with iconographic and decorative patterns created via a technique known as supplementary warp weaving which is more highly developed on the island of Sumba than anywhere else in Indonesia. Weavers work painstakingly to create decorative as well as figural raised motifs. In this case the central register includes four deer depicted in profile and looking upward with their antlers angled back; below each is a petite more petite baby deer. These figural scenes are surrounded by abstract decorative designs with borders above and below that also include animals and decorative motifs. After the piece was woven, accent colors were skillfully hand-painted onto the composition. The blue is derived from indigo, and the red dye is derived from a special type of wood. Size: 68" L x 15" H (172.7 cm x 38.1 cm); 74" L (188 cm) including tassels on each side
On Sumba Island, coveted patterns are passed from generation to generation - from grandmothers to grandaughters - through pattern guides known as pahudu comprised of string and palm fronds - and these patterns are safeguarded only for family members to use. Ikat textiles are important for life-cycle rites. When a couple is to marry, for example, the woman's family counters gifts from the man's family with these special woven cloths.
