Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. second half of the 20th century CE. A gorgeous kris (keris), with a hand-carved wooden handle featuring a pair of abstract anthropomorphic masks along the interior curve, and a silver spacer bulb inset with dozens of faceted cubic zirconia cabochons. The forged-steel blade has a gentle wavy profile, a projecting hand guard, sharp edges, and a pointed tip. Presented on the hand guard is an elephant-headed serpent with broad wings, a serpentine body with delineated scales, and a petal-adorned tail tip, all presented in glinting gilding (40%). The hand-carved wooden sheath has a slender blade housing adhered to the bottom of the bulbous guard protector, and the removable high-grade (97%) silver sheath jacket features a stunning scene of two Cendrawasih (birds-of-paradise) with petite beaked heads and flowing tails. A fabulous example replete with expert skill and opulent detailing! Size (w/ sheath): 6.25" W x 20" H (15.9 cm x 50.8 cm); length of blade: 15.5" L (39.4 cm); quality of gold: 40%; quality of silver: 97%.
