South Asia, Western India, Rajasthan, ca. mid-20th century CE. A cast-brass Jain Buddhist altar shrine of Buddha or Jain Tirthankara meditating under a canopy with 23 of his past incarnations seated around him upon the arched back panel. Symbolic animals and devotees also flank the main Tirthankara, and a spired stupa forms the finial of the panel. A "Tirthankara" (also called a "jina"), is an enlightened lord of the Jain region who had conquered the cycle of death and rebirth under his own volition. All 24 Tirthankaras are highly revered because they used their reincarnation as a type of spiritual lesson plan from which others could learn, and altar shrines of this type will depict specific Tirthankaras under the canopy.
