Southeast Asia, India, ca. 1920s CE. A wonderful architectural wooden panel featuring the Hindu deity Lord Shiva in the Nataraj pose. The panel is carved in high relief with Shiva dancing; legs bent, and arms outstretched to suggest energy and motion. His 8 hands hold several attributes and form mudra gestures. He is positioned on an integral shelf and surrounding his feet are devotees and attendants. At Shiva's shoulders is a pair of angels and above all is a Kirtimukha arch, with the monstrous face in the center. The wood is painted in polychrome hues of red, red, yellow, green, blue, white, and black. The dance is known as the Ananda Tandava, which Shiva uses to create and destroy. The panel has two pegs on the top that likely fit into wall of a temple or a temple chariot. A metal ring mounted on the verso for displaying this vibrant piece. Size: 13" L x 3" W x 35" H (33 cm x 7.6 cm x 88.9 cm)

Loss to wood on top of panel edge and to dragon's nose. Stable pressure fissures on Shiva's body, base, and on shoulders. Losses and chips to high pointed areas and some fading of pigments, but still quite vibrant and very detailed! Modern metal loop on verso for suspension.
