Native American, northern Pacific Northwest coast, probably Haida from Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Island), British Columbia, ca. mid 20th century CE. A fascinating, hand-carved wooden figure, clearly anthropomorphic, with a large head relative to its body and huge eyes and mouth. Tiny pieces of bone - probably marine mammal - form the centers of the eyes, and the nose is a long, carved piece of bone that is detachable by design. The figure stands with its legs and arms wide apart, its body decorated with deeply scored lines down the chest and legs and on the face. A hide loincloth is tied around the figure's waist, and a similar hide cape is on the figure's back, with the tie at the neck having a cylindrical metal bell. Two wooden hoop earrings are attached to the ears with leather strips. A spray of feathers forms a headdress that projects upward from the sides and top of the head, creating a corona effect. Size: 10.75" W x 35" H (27.3 cm x 88.9 cm); 36" H (91.4 cm) on included custom stand.
The Haida have a long tradition of carving human-like figures, but they are rare to find - especially one of this size!
