South Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. Commemorative plaque dates to early 1960s. A fabulous calabash bowl of an enormous size, hand-carved from fine-grained koa wood boasting deep caramel and golden hues. The vessel is defined by its wide, stable base, tall curved walls, and a deep basin. Traditionally, Hawaiian royalty valued specific calabashes - even going so far as to name them after royal individuals - and until the early 19th century they were reserved for elites in society. Bowls named after these special gourds were made using stone and coral tools to carve koa, milo, and kamani trees most commonly. This example also features a silver (94% silver) plaque with an inscription honoring one Nathan L. Tinkham (see inscription below). Size: 17" in diameter x 11.5" H (43.2 cm x 29.2 cm); plaque is 94% silver.
The inscription on the silver plaque reads as follows, "10-A CHAMPION AMONG CHAMPIONS - NATHAN T. TINKHAM - VICE PRESIDENT / GENERAL MANAGER - MILILANI MEMORIAL PARK INC. PEARL CITY, OAHU, HAWAII - ONE YEARS VOLUME - 5,001,926.00 - OCT 4, 1960 TO OCT. 2, 1961 - WITH THIS CALABASH GOES OUR DEEP RESPECT AND ADMIRATION FOR A JOB TRULY WELL DONE - ALOHA FROM - ALL THE COUNSELORS AT MILILANI MEMORIAL - THE UNDISPUTED WORLD'S CHAMPIONS"
