Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Alaska, Copper Center, Haida peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. Signed "Made by Timmy SaboN / Copper CeNter, AK. 99573 / To: Grandpa Merry - Xmas" on verso. A fine hand-carved wooden paddle meant to adorn a model canoe. The lovely paddle has a petaloid oar head with a pointed tip, a gently corseted handle, and a T-shaped hand bar on top. Though the entirety of its surface is enveloped by a natural, caramel-hued woodgrain, one side of the paddle is skillfully hand-painted with the image of a fish in profile. The aquatic creature is adorned in hues of scarlet, celadon, and black, and presents a lengthy body, a triangular tail fin, a huge eye, a curved beak, and an open mouth.
