Frank Yasutaro Oda (American, 1915-2001). Untitled mixed media diorama, ca. 1940s. Frank Yasutaro Oda was a wonderful artist who specialized in hale pua etched art glass and air brush paintings of Hawaiiana motifs, especially flora such as Bird of Paradise and Hibiscus. This sculptural mixed media diorama is quite an unusual example from Oda's oeuvre, depicting a carved wooden male figure dressed in voluminous garments and a wide-brimmed hat, who sits with his left leg raised and crossed over his right knee before a bamboo fence and holds a tall staff. Occupying most of the diorama is an elegant koa branch, and the base of the scene is covered with pebbles and artificial flowers over a green felt ground. A rare work by Hawaiian artist Frank Yasutaro Oda, created during the mid 20th century and accompanied by a custom Lucite case. Size: 7.5" L x 20" W x 8.75" H (19 cm x 50.8 cm x 22.2 cm) Size of Lucite case: 10.25" L x 20.25" W x 10.5" H (26 cm x 51.4 cm x 26.7 cm)
In addition, this piece is accompanied by a collection tag that states this was Mr. Oda's personal display for his office.

Condition
A few of the pebbles are not attached to the green felt 'grass'. One cluster of faux foliage is unattached but is instead nestled around the base of the branch. Minor surface wear with a few scuffs/chips to the fence. Loss to end of front branch that may have been there when Oda collected this branch. Only a couple of minute nicks to the figure, otherwise intact and very nice. Green foam core sheets are attached underneath wooden base to prevent scratching; some could be secured a bit more with an adhesive. Lucite case is open at one end, so the piece can easily slide in and out.
