William Joseph "Bill" Freeman (American, 1927-2012). Oil on canvas, ca. mid 20th century CE. A stunning Bill Freeman landscape painting, depicting a picturesque sunlit view of the American Southwest, likely a scene in Arizona given the elegant cacti and desert plants growing in the arid land. In the distance is a majestic mountain range with billowing clouds above. Freeman is known for his soothing palette, and this painting does not disappoint with sage green, azure blue, mauve, buttercup yellow, peach, and creamy white hues. In addition, his technique demonstrates free brushwork and a sophisticated command of the palette knife. Freeman presents us with a sublime view of this impressive mountain range from the natural desert landscape below. Size: 18" L x 24" W (45.7 cm x 61 cm)
Bill Freeman grew up in West Texas on a farm just outside of El Paso. Interestingly, he worked as a horse wrangler, fought forest fires for the U.S. Forest Service, and was a field researcher and guide for the Arizona Game and Fish Department for twelve years in Arizona, Wyoming, and New Mexico prior to becoming an artist. It was not until the age of 30 that Freeman decided to become an artist specializing in Western landscapes. Today he is considered a pioneer of Western art centered on such storied locales as Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
John Antweiler, Trustee of the William J. Freeman Estate, attests that some Bill Freeman paintings, like this example, were not signed. A digital copy of a document confirming this is available upon request.
