- Lot Description
William Joseph "Bill" Freeman (American, 1927-2012). Oil on canvas, ca. mid 20th century CE. A beautiful landscape painting depicting a serene setting with a flowing river flanked by clusters of evergreens in the foreground and sublime mountains in the background, all below azure skies graced by billowing clouds. Freeman's painting possesses an almost ethereal quality thanks to his dreamy palette of mauve, pink, lavender, sage green, golden yellow, azure blue, and white, and a style that demonstrates influences of Impressionism and Expressionism achieved via his sophisticated use of palette knife and brush. Freeman presents us with a privileged view of a mystical mountain range from the river below - a special tranquil scene. Size: 18" L x 24" W (45.7 cm x 61 cm)
Bill Freeman grew up in West Texas on a farm just outside of El Paso. Interestingly, he worked as a horse wrangler, fought forest fires for the U.S. Forest Service, and was a field researcher and guide for the Arizona Game and Fish Department for twelve years in Arizona, Wyoming, and New Mexico prior to becoming an artist. It was not until the age of thirty that Freeman decided to become an artist specializing in Western landscapes. Today he is considered a pioneer of Western art centered on such storied locales as Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Although this painting is not signed, a document from a representative of the William J. Freeman Estate confirming that it was painted by Bill Freeman can be provided upon request.
