Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali or Java, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A lovely hand carved wooden depiction of a mythical Naga creature with a female deity spirit standing upon his back. The Naga crouches on an integral flat base and this example is beautifully detailed, wings fanned out to his sides, head raised with bulging eyes, fierce fangs, and frills; bedecked with a crown, dangling earrings, and a pectoral. He is nicely embellished with red, black, golden, green, blue, and white pigmentation throughout. The divine woman known as an apsara stands upon an integral base set onto an elevated ledge upon his back, she leans forward, one hand raised to her chest, and she is adorned in a large headdress, necklace, and armbands. An apsara is a female spirit of the waters and the clouds in both Buddhist and Hindu mythology, usually depicted as beautiful celestial maidens. The woman and the Naga's tail are separate pieces that attach the main body with a wood peg or tenons. Size: 10.75" L x 4" W x 12" H (27.3 cm x 10.2 cm x 30.5 cm)
