Oceania, Australia, Aboriginal peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A large hand-carved wooden boomerang presenting a gently curved body that terminates with rounded wing tips; the surface is decorated with etched and burnished designs. The central elbow is adorned with ovoid and petaloid shapes, while the wing tips feature a stippled leaf and a chevron motif. Aboriginals made tools and airfoil weaponry from a variety of different woods known for their high density, heavy weight, and sturdy construction. The boomerang has been around for thousands of years, with portrayals of these throwing sticks in the Gwion Gwion rock paintings that are estimated at 18,000 years old!
