Atlantic Ocean, ca. 20th century CE. This is a strange piece comprised of the upper jawbone from a sailfish with hand drawn doodles and written words on one side. The famous bill or "sword" of the sailfish that projects from their heads is their upper jaw! One side of the bone is a smooth creamy white, and someone thought it was a good place to practice some art. We believe that a person from the United States or Portugal likely owned this bill at one point, as "AMERICA," "PORTUGAL" and "USA" are written in pencil with a chevron shape containing an American flag and a Portuguese flag. Additional heart shapes, flowers, leaves, and a faint fish are also drawn along this face. Sailfish are the fastest marine animal, and they chase schools of fish for food. This long jaw does not spear the fish but has tiny teeth that will slash and injure these smaller fish as they speed through the water. Their large size makes them a prized trophy fish for sport fisherman, but they are not particularly known for their taste. This unique bone could be framed as a tribute to this magnificent fish. Size: 27.375" L x 2.375" W (69.5 cm x 6 cm)
