Native American, Alaska, Inuit, ca. early 20th century CE. A handmade seal skin clothing accessory great for men in cold weather known as a "peter parka." The "parka" consists of a seal hide with the fur side out and sewn along one edge to create a tapering pocket. The pocket rim has two flaps that fold outward for total comfort and coverage of the full genital area. While it may be at first glance considered a novelty or joke item, seal skin undergarments - known as naasit - that looked like modern day thongs were common for women to wear. Two braided wool tassels are attached to the interior and hang down from the hide. A humorous and novelty piece of lingerie for the men! Size: 11" L x 3" W (27.9 cm x 7.6 cm)
