Africa, Dominican Republic of Congo, Hemba peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. A magnificent wooden ancestor figure on a circular plinth, hand-carved to represent both an individual and an ideal. Shown squatting with both hands on his protruding belly, the remarkable figure displays flat feet, thick legs flanking a conical phallus, a bulbous posterior, a pointed navel, and thick upper arms with attenuated forearms and carefully delineated fingers. An enormous tubular neck rises from his square shoulders to hold his stylized visage, which features a protruding chin, a closed mouth with straight, full lips that jut forward, a petite, button nose, and a pair of slender, closed eyes under an arched brow. Size: 8.375" in diameter x 19.5" H (21.3 cm x 49.5 cm); 21.5" H (54.6 cm) on included custom stand.
A thin strap with an incised geometric design wraps underneath his chin, behind his ears, and along the top of his forehead, perhaps representing a beard or a part of his extending cylindrical headdress that showcases an annular cross-like design on the area opposite his visage. Boasting a lustrous, deep mocha-brown finish, the intriguing figure also presents liberal remains of a creamy beige pigment on his integral plinth.
During the period of Belgian colonialism, figures like this one and similar others made by neighboring tribes became subtle symbols of resistance, depicting a vision of the body and the afterlife that was transgressive to the colonizers.
