Africa, South Sudan, Dinka Peoples, ca. first half of 20th century CE. A lovely hand-carved wood headrest in the form of an abstract reptile, perhaps a tortoise. Boasting a light brown woodgrain surface beneath a lustrous burnish, this fine example displays a distinct "saddle" head support sitting upon three sturdy legs. An ovoid head with a pointed snout and a pair of inlaid brass eyes protrudes from one side, while a tubular tail extends from the other. A series of additional inlaid brass embellishments adorns the periphery of the headrest, as well as the body and the legs of the reptile. The lovely example additionally features a braided cord of vegetal fiber strung through annular drill holes at the neck and tail, allowing this intriguing piece to be carried as a portable pillow. Size: 26.5" L x 4.625" W x 10.375" H (67.3 cm x 11.7 cm x 26.4 cm)
