West Africa, Ivory Coast, Baule people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A wood panel with a relief carving of a nude, standing woman on a rectangular platform. She has thick legs with a small incision to indicate female genitalia, and her hands frame her belly button. Incised geometric motifs decorate her torso, and above are small downward pointed breasts. A long neck rises from her rounded shoulders, and her facial features are stylized and topped with a fanned headdress. Triangles are incised along the edges of the panel, and a thin lip creates a round and shallow cavity near her left elbow. An intriguing panel that may have been cut from a larger door panel or half of a shutter for a window. Size: 9.5" L x .5" W x 21.5" H (24.1 cm x 1.3 cm x 54.6 cm)
