Central Asia, Afghanistan or Pakistan, Kuchi (Kochi) peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. An intricate ceremonial child's tunic made of cotton panels hand-sewn with dozens of cowrie shells, nickel-brass repousse appliques, and pendants with dangling ornaments. The cotton panels exhibit vibrant hues with a flannel interior panel and border of black cotton. The tunic has a hole at the top for the wearer's head, and the open sides are held in place with yarn ties. One side boasts glass seed bead medallions with flowers at the center, and below is a triangular nickel pendent with dangling ornaments inlaid with glass. The other side has another larger nickel pendent and dangling pieces as well. The rest of the appliques are painstakingly attached in symmetrical rows, comprised of cowrie shells and repousse nickel discs in floral and geometric motifs. With all these applied details, this is a heavy outfit! Such ornate tunics were worn during special occasions such as weddings. Size: 18.5" L x 16.5" W (47 cm x 41.9 cm)
According to Richard Tapper's article, "Who are the Kuchi? Nomad self-identities in Afghanistan" published in the Journal of Royal Anthropological Institute, "'Kuchi', an Afghan Persian word meaning 'those who go on migrations', is the common generic term, used by both Afghans and foreigners, for the nomads of Afghanistan, as it has been for many decades. Most if not all the nomads, and indeed many long-settled former nomads, now acknowledge this name, yet in the 1960s and 1970s few of those so labelled used the term for themselves."
