Roberts, from Edinburgh, was the first professional artist from Europe to visit the Near East without connection to a military expedition or missionary group. In 1838, he sailed to Alexandria and traveled up the Nile River, through Egypt and then to the Holy Land, arriving in Jerusalem for Easter the following year. He also traveled into Lebanon and Beirut. He produced 247 lithographs from his travels based on extensive notes, sketches, and watercolors he made during the journey. Louis Haghe, one of the greatest lithographers of his time, produced these. John Ruskin described these as, "true portraiture of scenes of historical and religious interest. They are faithful and laborious beyond any outlines from nature I have ever seen."
