James Chan Leong (Chinese-American, 1929-2011). "Seated Figure" and "Mother and Child" mixed media, 1961. Both signed and dated. Seated Figure on lower right. Mother and Child on lower left. A moving pair of abstract figural mixed media works created by Chinese-American post-war artist James Chan Leong when he was living in Rome in 1961. While San Francisco, California was his home, Leong would stay in Italy for three decades. Although the subjects of these pieces do not overtly address his Chinese heritage, their universality speaks volumes about the artist's hopes to combat the biases associated with ethnic identity. These works are created with paper, vinavil, ink, HCL, and casein on paper mounted on canvas. Size: Mother and Child 17.75" L x 12.5" W (45.1 cm x 31.8 cm); 24.25" L x 18.3" W (61.6 cm x 46.5 cm) framed - Seated Figure 17.5" L x 13.125" W (44.4 cm x 33.3 cm); 24.25" L x 18.3" W (61.6 cm x 46.5 cm) framed
These compositions will be accompanied by a copy of a lengthy letter to the former owner Pat Baker in which Leong states, "I'm really flattered and honored by your selection of my work, and hope the paintings bring you as much joy as it did to me during creation. I'm glad they found a good home . . . " They are also accompanied by an artist declaration in which James Chan Leong stated that he was an American artist living in Rome, Italy when they were painted in 1961.
James Chan Leong had a very successful career, receiving many significant honors and using his art to engage with his identity. Leong went to Norway on a Fulbright Scholarship in 1956. After this, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship which took him to Rome where he stayed at the American Academy. A charismatic individual, he actually transformed the 15th century Palazzo Pio into an artists' haven, subletting spaces to famous artists such as Cy Twombly. Leong found comfort in Italy where his Chinese American identity was welcomed and embraced. He stated, "I think more than anything else, it gave me a sense of self and assurance that you don't have here … People in America are constantly questioning who you are, what you are. There's always a stratum here that you have to belong to."

Creases/fissures to applied paper part of Leong's process and occurred when created. Compositions have darkened a bit over time, but are in relatively good condition. Both works are signed and dated. Seated Figure on lower right. Mother and Child on lower left. A few scuffs and chips to custom frames and a few areas of indentations to mats. Both are wired for suspension. Both have exhibition labels on the verso as well.
