Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi culture, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE; West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a lovely pair of ancient stone, shell, and pottery beads, all strung as wearable necklaces. The first is a long strand with dozens of petite disc, seed, and tubular beads made from a dark gray and black stone and pottery, and along the length are a few interesting shapes with stippling or engraving. At the center is the large diamond shaped pendant made from a red terracotta and pierced through the top. The other necklace is strung with dozens of similar beads, a few discoid shell beads, and two zoomorphic shaped beads: a bird and a fish. At the center is a pendant bead made from a Manabi ceramic spindle whorl, incised with linear etching around the carinated body. Both necklaces are strung in modern times with lobster clasps and are wearable pieces of Pre-Columbian jewelry! Size longer necklace: 25" L (63.5 cm); pendant bead: 1.25" L x 1" W (3.2 cm x 2.5 cm); shorter necklace: 20" L (50.8 cm); spindle bead: 0.35" L x 0.7" W (0.9 cm x 1.8 cm)
