European, Italian School, 19th to early 20th century. A pair of Neoclassical paintings depicting two ancient goddesses or muses. Both are impressively large, trompe l'oeil paintings that feature images of these classical beauties, one holding a wreath and the other holding a palm branch, housed within architectural niches. Both are trompe l'oeil paintings, French meaning to deceive the eye. Note how the artist created visual illusions by mastering modeling, foreshortening, and chiaroscuro. In addition, the artist used the technique of grisaille painting, employing a relatively monochromatic palette to emphasize forms and values, thus emphasizing the three-dimensional quality of the compositions. A very rare pair that certainly make an impression! Size (each painting): 77.25" L x 35.4" W (196.2 cm x 89.9 cm)
