Charles Rennie Mackintosh (Scottish, 1868-1928). "Willow Herb / Buxtead" lithograph, 1919. AND Bouquet after Pierre Francois Turpin (French, 1775-1840). "Royale Ordinaire" mid 19th century. A wonderful pair of botanical prints of fruit and flowers. First, a lithograph created when Charles Rennie Mackintosh did some architectural work near Buxted in Sussex in 1919 and 1920. In this lithograph, Mackintosh depicts several flowers and unopened fruits of Rosebay Willow-herb (Chamerion angustifolium). The plum and magenta flower at the center is the largest, and the yellow flower at the bottom left is from an unidentified plant. It is set in an attractive custom frame. Size of larger (Mackintosh): 15.75" L x 12.125" W (40 cm x 30.8 cm) Size of frame: 31.625" L x 25.625" W (80.3 cm x 65.1 cm)
Joining the Mackintosh is an original hand-colored aquatint engraving, plate 196 from De l'Imprimerie de Langlois, entitled "Royale Ordinaire" from an exquisite group of stipple engravings done during the heyday of French botanical illustration. The composition depicts an elegant cutting from a cherry tree, presenting the fruit from seed to fruit - seen also in cross section and with its blossoms. The piece was engraved by Bouquet after Pierre Francois Turpin (French, 1775-1840). "Turpin and Poiteau collaborated in some of the most important botanical publications of the early years of the nineteenth century…" Wilfred Blunt, The Art of Botanical Illustration, p. 208. The drawings of Turpin and Poiteau were transferred into stipple engravings by approximately twenty carefully selected artists and color-printed by Langlois, the esteemed French color-printer who also supervised much of Redoute's oeuvre. Size of plate mark: 12.625" L x 9.5" W (32.1 cm x 24.1 cm) Size of frame: 25.5" L x 21" W (64.8 cm x 53.3 cm)
