North America, Western United States, central Montana, Cretaceous period, 145.5 to 66 million years ago; North America, Yukon / Alaska, ca. millions of years old. This is an interesting collection of 2 natural gold pieces and 2 fossilized dinosaur bones. The first pure gold fleck is from eastern Alaska or Canadian Yukon gold deposits, probably near the Klondike River, and the other gold fleck is within a creamy white quartzite matrix that has been cut and polished to enhance the gold inclusion! The 2 bones are from a Ceratopsidae type of dinosaur, which include the most famous genus, Triceratops. These are phalanges or toe bones, that made up the foot of these large creatures. Looking at our own finger bones certainly helps visualize the massive size of these creatures. Size of largest bone: 2.25" L x 1.25" W (5.7 cm x 3.2 cm); gold fleck: 0.15" L (0.4 cm); case: 1" L x 1" W x 0.8" H (2.5 cm x 2.5 cm x 2 cm)
Gold was discovered by prospectors along the Klondike River region in the late 19th century, resulting in the Klondike Gold Rush from 1897 to 1898. Approximately 100,000 hopeful miners took flight to the Yukon and Alaskan wilderness, less than half made it to the area, only a few thousand even found gold, and a few hundred profited from their discoveries. Imaginably, the few that found gold probably only found flecks of this size!
