Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 500 CE. A beautiful set of 2 hand-built pottery vessels from ancient Peru - a kero and a bowl - both with highly burnished surfaces painted with vibrant polychrome pigments. The kero features a round but stable base, a corseted midsection, and a thin rim surrounding the basin. Two rows of severed trophy heads encircle the exterior walls - the bottom of more minimalist aesthetic, and the top with stylized half-portraits. The larger bowl exhibits a round but stable base beneath tall walls decorated with 17 abstract marine creatures, perhaps a native Peruvian catfish species known as Trichomycterus punctulatus. Size (fish bowl): 7.3" W x 3.75" H (18.5 cm x 9.5 cm); (trophy head kero): 4.4" W x 4" H (11.2 cm x 10.2 cm)

Condition
Both vessels have light abrasions and fading to pigment in some areas, otherwise intact and excellent. Kero has nice root marks, and both vessels have wonderful preservation to painted decorations. Old inventory label on interior wall of bowl.
