A fascinating pair of codices: the second edition of "Synopsis Medicinae, or a Compendium of Astrological, Galenical, and Chymical Physick" by William Salmon and "Gunn's New Domestic Physician: Or, Home Book of Health" by John C. Gunn. First, "Synopsis Medicinae" was printed by Thomas Dawks in London with the full title of "Synopsis medicinae : a compendium of physick, chirurgery, and anatomy : in IV books : shewing the signs, causes, judgments, and various ways of curing all diseases whether external or internal, hapning to the bodies of humane kind: perform'd astrologically, Galenically, and chymically: illustrated with celestial observations, the judgments of urines, and pulses, the presages of Hippocrates from the body of the sick, the manner of performing of all kinds of chirurgick operations, the art of embalming of dead bodies, both ancient and modern, the chirurgian's chest, fitted both for sea and land, the explication and use of all sorts of chirurgick instruments, with their various figures, the cure of all manner of tumors, wounds, ulcers, fractures and dislocations, with many other things of excellent use, and a compleat anatomical idea, of the whole body of man." The intriguing book not only consists of 4 volumes with the first 2 having been printed in 1679 and the last 2 in 1680 , but also 24 illustrations from copper plates and special title pages for books 2, 3, and 4. A few notes and signatures from previous owners can be found throughout the book, especially on page 334 where it is signed "William Poole / his book 8ber / 1748" and also states the book was given as a present on March 25th, 1794. Alternatively, the second codex was published in 1862 by Moore, Wilstach, Keys & Co. in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1862 with the full title of "Gunn's New Domestic Physician: Or, Home Book of Health. A Complete Guide For Families Pointing out in Familiar and Plain Terms the Causes, Symptoms, Treatment, and Cure of the Diseases Incident to Men, Women, and Children, with Directions for Using Medicinal Plants and the Simplest and Best New Remedies, and Giving also Many Valuable Rules for Avoiding Disease and Prolonging Life. With an Appendix on Anatomy, Physiology, Etc., Etc." The wonderful medical book consists of 1046 pages, 10 beautifully preserved illustrated plates, and a portrait of the author on the inside of the front cover. Objects dear to previous owners, such as pressed flowers and leaves, notes, drawings, and newspaper clippings of medical advice for humans and horses, poems, and significant events, are scattered throughout the book. The first book was printed on laid paper and the second on machine-made paper. Size of largest: 6.5" L x 4.125" W x 10" H (16.5 cm x 10.5 cm x 25.4 cm)

"Synopsis Medicinae": Most illustrated plate pages have an indiscernible watermark in either upper or lower interior corner. Missing pages from front and back. Some pages are loose and many have tearing, folding, staining, and areas of loss. Losses, folds, and stains to cover. "Gunn's New Domestic Physician": Binding and pages are detached from cover and some pages detached from binding. Tears, folding, and losses to some pages. Folding to cover. Both have nice preservation of illustrations.
