A delightful pair of glazed stoneware and pewter Mettlach beer steins, the first one featuring a female bicyclist with text reading, "Durch Land u. Stadt, durch Wald u. Feld / All Heil! Dem Rad, gehört die Welt!" (Through country and city, through woodland and field safe travels! The bicycle belongs to the world!) The lid is inlaid with a bicycle on a lovely path flanked by grass - and a pewter thumblift presenting a bicyclist in bas relief provides an additional charming touch! The second stein presents a barmaid serving a student and is signed by H. Schlitt. This one reads, "Was kann uns mehr erfreu'n als Weib, Gesang und Wein? / Ein gut Glas Bier um halber acht, wenn mir’s die Eva hat gebracht." (What can please us more than women, song and wine? A good glass of beer at half past seven, if Eva brings it to me.) The lid is inlaid with a heart pierced by an arrow and lock motif - and is joined to a lovely pewter thumblift presenting a Cupid in bas-relief. Condition
Base of the bicyclist stein has stable pressure fissures on the underside of the base. Otherwise, both are in excellent condition. Mettlach makers marks and collection numbers on the bases. Pewter mountings and thumb lifts are intact and show nice patina. Details are very strong.
