- Lot Description
Europe, Germany, Mettlach, Villeroy & Boch, Mettlach # 1997. Signed by M. Hein. Early 20th c. A wonderful pair of antique beer steins. The first one commemorating the George Ehret Brewery features a portrait of Ehret in black against a pale pink ground and a hexagram decoration on the lid that is oftentimes mistaken for a Jewish Star of David on the lid. Instead, it is a German brewing symbol that was popular on beer steins created in the early 20th century. The text on the white banners in the field of the walls of the vessel reads, "Hopfen u. Malz, Gott erhalt's" (Hops and malt, may God preserve them.) In addition, flourishing hops on leafy vines adorn the field and also creates a border around the hexagram on the lid. The thumblift features a rendering of the American crest with a bald eagle. Holds .5 liters, signed by M. Hein next to lower end of handle. Size: both measure 9.125" H (23.2 cm) and hold .5 liters
Europe, Germany, 1910. Paired with the Mettlach beer stein is a German porcelain stein with an extensively decorated brass lid and thumblift depicting a lion bearing a crest. On the base is an impression of two standing figures and a makers mark with the number 2145. This handsome stein was created to honor a military regiment; note "Bayerisches Luftschiffer-Bataillon - Munchen - 1910" is written in calligraphic script just below the rim. An elaborate crest adorns the side walls of the vessel. This is flanked by two officers, Erinerung an m. Dienstzeit (in memory of the time we spent) is written on the banners that they stand upon. A zeppelin and several planes are in flight in the landscape beyond.

#147463The handle of the porcelain stein has been repaired from about 6 pieces. Slight age wear to the surface. Nice patina to the lid and thumblift. The Mettlach stein is in overall very good condition. Both steins have makers marks and numbers on the bases.Condition
