Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. This is a type often found in Pompeii, but we cannot make that claim based on provenance we have. Quite large and quite exceptional bronze handle that once adorned a bronze vessel - possibly oinochoe or hydria. Angular handle with semi-ringed arms that attached to the vessel rim with 90 degree ledge arching slightly to the lower visage of Dionysus shown in high relief. Bushy beard and mustache, almond-shaped eyes with silver irises. Because of the vine tendral in the scene we can make the assumption this is the Greek god Dionysus - Roman god Bacchus. A truly stunning example and must have been one incredible vessel! Size: 5.625" H (14.3 cm); 8.625" H (21.9 cm) on included custom stand.
Dionysus was the Greek god of fertility. Later, he came to be known chiefly as the god of wine and pleasure and was later known by the Romans as Bacchus.
This item has been tested using XRF technology and is shown to be bronze with small amounts of silver at the eyes. This is consistent with bronzes of the period.
