Europe, United Kingdom, Victorian Period, ca. later 19th century CE. A massive painted wool tapestry, made as part of the Arts and Crafts Movement. The tapestry is decorated with medieval-style artwork, including a large coat of arms at the center featuring three towers, a sun, an eagle, and three tall beech trees. This is surmounted by a closed helmet from a suit of armor with massive feathered plumes projecting from its sides and top. Surrounding the coat of arms are two tall trees, with lionesses standing behind the trunk of each, peering out at the viewer. They are in a border of geometric forms, leaves, and flowers, with small shields painted at each corner - an eagle, a fleur-de-lis, a sunrise, and a vase. Tassels line the vertical edges. Size: 90.25" W x 105.5" H (229.2 cm x 268 cm)
From the later 1700s onward, western Europeans became fascinated by the medieval period - what seemed, to them, like a time of simplicity and chivalry, a respite from the incredible changes the Industrial Revolution was bringing to every aspect of life. Reviving the material culture of the so-called Middle Ages became a series of major artistic movements. For example, during the second half of the 19th century in the UK, the Arts and Crafts Movement emphasized natural beauty and traditional crafts - in painting, furniture, architecture, ceramics, stained glass, jewelry, and tapestries. William Morris (1834 to 1896) led the way with many of these applied arts - for example, he read a 14th century French manual on tapestry weaving, built a loom, and began to create tapestries, many based on Pre-Raphaelite paintings. Tapestries like this one were directly inspired by his work.
