North America, USA, Boston, Massachusetts, ca. 1840 CE. A handsome steel sword with a leather sheath and polished brass hilt, issued as a non-commissioned officer's presentation sword (NCO sword) by the U. S. Army. This sword is from the period of the Mexican American War, and is engraved with, "C. I. Emery, Boston, Mass." The blade is also engraved with beautiful floral motifs. Lieutenant Emery served as a quartermaster for the Massachusetts Volunteers for the duration of the Mexican American War. This sword was based on a German version of the infantry sword that was used by British troops during the Napoleonic Wars. It was used from the Mexican American War (1846-1848) through the Civil War (1861-1865) and Spanish American War (1898). Size: 4.7" W x 39" H (11.9 cm x 99.1 cm)
The Model 1840 NCO sword has a distinguished history. The US Army contracted it from Schnitzler & Kirschbaum (S&K) of Solingen, Prussia for 1000 swords, then N.P. Ames Manufacturing Company of Cabotville, Massachusetts in 1844, Ames Manufacturing Company of Cabotville (1847), and finally Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicoppee, Massachusetts in the 1850s. Ames manufactured its first swords incorrectly so that they had a blunt edge, but soldiers found a way to use them as a club! Early photographs of Union soldiers often show them with these swords, and the Confederacy acquired many by capturing weapons stores. After 1868, the Army ordered them to have steel scabbards instead of leather. The leather scabbard here is further proof of the age of the sword.
