Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A fine, silvered brass standing avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu - known as the preserver in the Hindu trinity (Trimurti) which also includes Brahma and Shiva - with a boar head, an elaborate headdress, and 32 arms presented in double rows, each one holding ritual implements vajra and bell. His consort - either Sarasvati, the goddess of music and poetry, or Lakshmi, the goddess of good fortune - is wrapped around his waist in a tantric Yab Yum position. Beneath his multiple feet the figure tramples ignorance. The bottom cavity of the lotus pedestal is sealed and stamped with an intricate stylized phytomorphic emblem. Size: 5.25" W x 7.75" H (13.3 cm x 19.7 cm)
Given the presence of the seal, this statue was likely created for religious practices. When such figures are consecrated, the image is first purified in order to be deemed suitable for the inhabitance of Buddha or another deity, in this case Vishnu. Then the statue is invested with the presence and power of that deity. Unless it has been consecrated, a statue is not considered suitable for use in religious practices. Holy articles are traditionally sealed inside.
Yab-yum literally means "man-woman" and this tantric sensual union represents peace-making between spiritual polarities. As expert Ben Meulenbeld explains, yab-yum is a "non-orgasmic action that is meant to express the elimination of duality" (Buddhist Symbolism in Tibetan Thangkas, p. 73). It represents the male (symbolizing compassion and skillful means) in sexual union with the female (symbolizing wisdom and insight).
