Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden coconut grater in the form of a recumbent rabbit laying with slender legs tucked beneath its bulbous body. The raised head is conical in form and features a pair of ovoid shell eyes, two lengthy ears draped along its back, and a curved, serrated grating tool ensconced within the mouth. Size: 20.7" L x 4.75" W (52.6 cm x 12.1 cm)
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-De Roche collection, Piedmont, California, USA, acquired in 1970

Nicks and abrasions to body and head, with several stable hairline fissures, and encrustations on grating tool, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina throughout.
