Southeast Asia, Thailand or Cambodia, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden coconut grater depicting an adorable recumbent rabbit. The bunny rests atop a quartet of retracted legs and has a lean body, a pair of laid back ears atop the shoulders, and a squat, upturned tail. The raised head boasts a pair of inlaid ivory eyes with jet-black ebony pupils, and a curved metal grating tool projects from a small opening in the mouth. A refined work of culinary art from Southeast Asia, traditionally used in the preparation of delectable curries and desserts. Nice patina from age and use. Condition
Normal surface wear with scuffs, abrasion, and scratches to the body and head. Pressure fissure on underside. Slight bending and rich brown patina to metal grater. Light yellowing to inlaid ivory eyes, but so nice that they have survived the tests of time. Light encrustations within some recessed areas. Expected age cracks. Wood has developed a fine patina commensurate with age and use.
