Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A lovely cast-brass devotional statue of the Buddha seated on an elaborate throne surrounded by images of his life. This Buddha is slender and sitting upright with his hands forming a mudra gesture. Around his lap, positioned by his shoulder, and above his head are depictions of the Buddha at various stages of his life before reaching enlightenment. These representations are seated in full lotus positions and framed by a leaf shape that represents the bodhi tree. The verso also contains relief imagery of his ascension to enlightenment. The interior of the hollow base has old brick infill to stabilize this piece when it was part of a temple or shrine. Size: 4.5" W x 10.75" H (11.4 cm x 27.3 cm)
